Review of SHUAN HERN LEE’s solo recital in Adelaide by Keith Hempton:
"A prodigiously talented young pianist gave two consecutive recitals for Recitals Australia today. He played about 90 minutes of very difficult music from memory and very well.
The first recital was of Mozart and Chopin and the initial impression is of a towering technique and a more than embryonic sense of style. If you were looking for a parallel, I would suggest Lang Lang without the mannerisms. His way with some of the more difficult Chopin Etudes (are any of them NOT difficult?) was hugely impressive. His left hand is as good as his right and each of the pieces seemed to me to communicate the particular colours and stylistic awareness appropriate. As I write these comments I have to remind myself that this diminutive whirlwind is only 11years old!
Debussy and Miriam Hyde were more in the post Lisztian technical mould and here the young man is exemplary. The Muczynski toccata is an absolute tour de force, perhaps a little in the Prokofiev manner, and once again the whirlwind’s technical prowess stood firm.
This was quite unreasonably good playing for one of such tender years, indeed most of much less tender years would be hard put to match this young man who is undoubtedly on his way to a very fine career."
